Parkland Formula

Uses the modified Parkland formula — 3 ml/kg per %TBSA — for crystalloid in the first 24 hours from the time of the burn, not from arrival. Half is given in the first 8 hours, the remainder over the following 16. Fluid is then titrated to urine output, which…

Before you use it

Use warmed Hartmann’s (compound sodium lactate), not 0.9% saline — large-volume saline risks hyperchloraemic acidosis. The clock starts at the time of the BURN, not at arrival: if they arrive two hours after the injury, that time comes out of the first 8-hour allocation. Titrate to urine output — 0.5 ml/kg/hr in adults, 1 ml/kg/hr in children. Below 15% TBSA in an adult (10% in a child) this formula is not the right tool; give maintenance and discuss with the burns unit.
